The 50th Anniversary Homecoming

June 2026

Some journeys are about reaching a destination. Others become memories that stay with you forever.

The Porsche 924 50th Anniversary Homecoming was very much the latter.

What made the trip even more special was that it was Peggy’s first major adventure. Having only recently become the owner of this beautiful 1988 Porsche 924S Le Mans, the opportunity to drive her back to Germany, the birthplace of the Porsche 924, felt like the perfect way to begin our story together.

Travelling across Europe in a classic Porsche is an experience that’s difficult to put into words. From the smooth motorways of Belgium and Germany to the sweeping roads through the countryside, every mile reminded me why these cars were built to be driven. Peggy performed flawlessly throughout the journey, proving that even after nearly four decades, a well-maintained 924 is still a capable and rewarding grand tourer.

One of the greatest highlights was meeting fellow Porsche 924 enthusiasts from across Europe. The passion, knowledge and generosity within the community were remarkable. Everyone had a story to tell, whether it was about restoring a long-forgotten project, preserving a cherished family car or travelling hundreds of miles to be part of the celebration. It reinforced something I’d already begun to discover through the Porsche 924 Owners Club, these cars bring together an incredible community of people.

One of the defining moments of the trip was bringing the cars home to Neckarsulm, the city where the Porsche 924 was originally built. Driving Peggy through the streets and arriving alongside more than one hundred Porsche 924s from across Europe was an incredible sight and a reminder of just how important this model has become to enthusiasts. The celebrations centred around the NSU Museum and the Audi Forum, both fitting venues given Neckarsulm’s rich automotive heritage. Seeing row upon row of beautifully preserved and restored 924’s, representing every variant from early cars through to the rare Le Mans editions, Carrera GT and Turbo’s was something few enthusiasts ever get to experience. The atmosphere was one of genuine celebration, with owners sharing stories, comparing cars and celebrating fifty years of a model that has long deserved greater recognition within Porsche’s history. To be part of that gathering, and to return Peggy to the place where cars like her first came to life nearly four decades earlier, was a truly unforgettable experience.

Visiting the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart was another unforgettable moment. Standing amongst some of Porsche’s most iconic road and racing cars while knowing that Peggy belonged to the same family was a genuinely special experience. Seeing the evolution of the marque, from its earliest models to modern-day legends, gave an even greater appreciation for where the 924 fits within Porsche’s history.

For me personally, this trip represented the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. What had started years earlier with a dormant restoration project sitting quietly in my garage had grown into driving one of Porsche’s rarest 924 special editions across Europe to celebrate fifty years of the model. It was one of those moments where you stop, look around, and realise that you’ve achieved something you once only imagined.

Perhaps the most satisfying part of the entire journey was how effortless it felt. There were no major breakdowns or dramas—just thousands of enjoyable miles, fantastic roads, wonderful company and countless memories. For a classic car owner, that’s about as good as it gets.

The Homecoming wasn’t simply a road trip; it marked the beginning of Peggy’s story. It confirmed that this car wasn’t destined to spend its life hidden away in a garage or under a cover. Peggy was built to be driven, explored and enjoyed, and I hope this was just the first of many adventures we’ll share together.

If this journey taught me one thing, it’s that classic car ownership is about far more than the cars themselves. It’s about the people you meet, the places you discover and the memories you create along the way. The Porsche 924 50th Anniversary Homecoming delivered all of that—and more.
